PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat surface fluorescent lamp equipped with a small exhaust chip. SOLUTION: The flat surface fluorescent lamp is provided with a discharge vessel 1 with a vent hole 111 formed in communication with a discharge cell 13 formed inside, phosphor layers 41, 42 formed on an inside face of the discharge vessel 1, external electrodes 51, 52 formed at the discharge vessel 1, an exhaust chip 3 inserted into the vent hole 111 so as to protrude toward the discharge cell 13, and frit glass 22 formed between the vent hole 111 and the exhaust chip 3.
