The method involves producing an electrical high-voltage field between a high voltage electrode (4) and an object (8) while coating the object with coating material. The high-voltage field is weakened by an anti-high voltage field directed against object edges (31-34) or an object area lying closely with the edge only during spray-coating of edge with coating material and not during spray-coating of an extensive surface area (36) distant from the edge, where the anti-high voltage field has an electrical polarity set to the high-voltage field and by anti-high voltage electrodes (11-14). An independent claim is also included for an electrostatic spray-coating device comprising a spraying unit.
