PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording and reproducing apparatus that generates correction data capable of eliminating fixed distortion inherent to the apparatus and that performs a reproducing process by correcting the fixed distortion. SOLUTION: The hologram recording and reproducing apparatus is equipped with: a reproducing signal detecting unit which reproduces a two-dimensional pattern preliminarily recorded in a hologram recording medium or reproduces the user data recorded in the hologram recording medium; a reference pattern memory unit where a reference pattern to be obtained upon reproducing the two-dimensional pattern is preliminarily memorized; a correction information generating unit which compares a reproduced reference pattern signal corresponding to a reproduced two-dimensional pattern with the memorized reference pattern and generates correction information to eliminate the fixed distortion included in the reproduced reference pattern signal and to reproduce a reference pattern from the reproduced reference pattern signal; a correction information memory unit where the correction information is memorized; and a distortion correcting unit which performs correction computation using the correction information on the reproduced data signal of the reproduced user data and generates corrected reproduced data with the fixed distortion eliminated.
