A method of managing a data transmission in a telecommunications network, said method comprising: monitoring the data transmission associated with a connection; saving information associated with the data transmission; and after a discontinuity in the data transmission, the connection is maintained or released based on the saved information. Further using the method when doing a Routing Area Update and determining whether to set a Follow-On Request indicator based upon the time since the last transmitted packet.
