PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism which allows for providing optimum AF control in accordance with a condition of a shooting object when recording video while periodically changing exposure time.SOLUTION: A control unit 101 continuously records a group of multistage exposure images taken while an image capturing unit 103 periodically changes exposure time, updates a position of a focusing lens 102 along an optical axis using a focus evaluation value for either an image in the group of multistage exposure images that was recorded with least exposure time or an image recorded with exposure time shorter than a predefined reference value or both, and controls a drive unit to move the focusing lens 102 to the updated position.
