PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an increase of tension of running paper even when a diameter of a roll decreases and to reduce an axial width of a device. SOLUTION: The roll supporting device has a support shaft 11 provided on one arm 5 provided axially facing a rotary shaft, inserted in one end sides of core tubes 6 of rolls R and R', and pressed against end faces of the core tubes, a first supporting means A comprising a pawl member 21 protruding from a circumferential face of the support shaft by an external force, a remaining core detaching means B built in the first supporting means, pushing out a push plate 23 to a tip of the support shaft by an external force, and removing a remaining core Ra, a second supporting means D provided on a facing another arm 4, having an axial moving margin, pressed by in a protruding direction by a spring, and supporting other end sides of the core tubes, moving means E and E' moving the second supporting means, and a winding diameter detecting means F detecting the diameter of a roll in usage. The second supporting means can be moved within the moving margin when the roll diameter becomes a predetermined diameter.
