PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for inspecting the foreign matter and defect of a container capable of detecting even the foreign matter or defect on the inner and outer surfaces of the container and between the material layers of the container only by a CCD camera with a CPU from either one of upward and downward directions without increasing apparatus cost. SOLUTION: In the method for inspecting the foreign matter and defect of a cylindrical container 10 comprising paper with a basis weight of 50-500 g/m<2> and having an opening part provided to the upper end thereof, the inner surface of the container is illuminated by an upper annular luminaire 20, the reflected light from the shade of the foreign matter and defect 12 of the inner surface of the container is detected by the CCD camera 30, and the outer surface of the container is also illuminated from below by a lower annular luminarie 22. Even the shade of the foreign matter and defect 11 of the outer surface or the shade of the foreign matter and defect between the paper material layers is detected on the basis of the transmitted light through the paper materials. The apparatus 100 adapted to this method is also disclosed.
