The surgical instrument (10) has an end effector (14) defining a longitudinal axis and comprising a movably supported tool unit (18). A force transmission unit (22) is movably supported in a shaft (12) in distal and proximal direction for transmitting actuating force, which is induced at a proximal end of the instrument, to the end effector for moving the tool unit. The tool unit is connected with the force transmission unit over a flexible drive unit in sections for transmitting the actuating force from the force transmission unit to the tool unit.
