<p>In the presence of high-luminance image mixed with low-luminance image, it is intended to increase the number of gradations for the low-luminance image and thus attain an enhancement of image quality. One field for displaying of one screen of plasma display panel is composed of multiple subfields. Selective sustaining discharge is induced between first and second electrodes in each of the subfields to thereby attain multiple-tone display of image. A detection circuit detects whether or not any unwanted subfield not requiring any sustaining discharge is present for each display line. The display line is composed of pixels formed along the first electrode. When no unwanted subfield is present, a sustaining control circuit induces a preset number of sustaining discharges in each of the subfields. When an unwanted subfield is present, the sustaining control circuit induces sustaining discharges fewer than a preset minimum number of sustaining discharges in at least one of the subfields.</p> |
