PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the reduction in electric power for illumination while automatically controlling the illumination of a road according to the passage of vehicles and maintaining traveling safety and smooth passage of the vehicles.SOLUTION: A road illumination system includes: a plurality of detectors which are provided along a road and detect vehicles traveling on the road; a plurality of illuminations which are provided in each of a plurality of continuous sections on the road; and a control device which turns on illuminations of predetermined sections in front of vehicles in response to vehicle detection signals from the detectors.
