The invention relates to a method for separating alkali metal ions from alkali metal ion-containing alkoxylates. The method comprises the following steps: a) diluting the alkali metal ion-containing alkoxylate with an inert solvent, b) treating the alkali metal ion-containing alkoxylate with a cation exchanger to obtain a solution of the alkoxylate that is substantially devoid of alkali metal ions, c) removing the solvent from the alkoxylate solution that is substantially devoid of alkali metal ions, and obtaining an alkoxylate that is substantially devoid of alkali metal ions and substantially solvent-free.
