An image reading device reads out a document by using a plurality of reading units having a plurality of light receiving elements arrayed in a main scanning direction. Read pixel data on the portion where the pixels in the main scanning direction of adjoining CIS overlap is subjected to an averaging operation, in which the output values of individual light receiving elements at the same position in the main scanning direction are weighted, and the weighting coefficients are not made identical in an overlap range. The image reading device thus provided can suppress the image quality deterioration at the joints of the reading units and has a high reading image quality.
