The invention relates to a method for determining the position of a medical instrument (4). The medical instrument (4) is equipped with at least one light-sensitive sensor (1) on which light (L) emitted from at least one light source (5) arranged at a known position is incident at an angle of incidence (α, α1, α2, α3, α4). In order to determine the position and/or the orientation of the medical instrument (4), a measured variable based on the angle of incidence (α, α1, α2, α3, α4) is detected.
