PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder which can perform recording while setting a recording position in the main scanning direction of a recording material with high precision. SOLUTION: A carriage 61 is substantially moved to the middle of a reciprocal range (step S1), a recording sheet P is fed, and then the recording sheet P is conveyed up to such a position as the vicinity of the tip thereof opposes a PW sensor 34 (step S2). The carriage 61 is then moved to the right direction at a constant speed (step S3), right side end PR of the recording sheet P is detected (Yes at step S4), and a position where the output signal from the PW sensor 34 has a predetermined valueαbecomes a main scanning direction position X1. The carriage 61 is then moved to the left direction at a constant speed (step S5), left side end PL of the recording sheet P is detected (Yes at step S6), and a position where the output signal from the PW sensor 34 has a predetermined valueαbecomes a main scanning direction position X2.
