PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily estimate contamination of a thermal recording material stuck to a head with high accuracy. SOLUTION: This thermal printer has a platen roll 20 for conveying a thermal recording material 10 and a head 30 for applying heat to the thermal recording material by pressing the thermal recording material. In this method of estimating a thermal recording material by estimating contamination of the thermal recording material to the head 30 by printing on the thermal recording material by the thermal printer. In the thermal printer, a distance between a pressing point B of the head on the thermal recording material and a pressing point A of the platen roll on the thermal recording material in the conveyance direction of the thermal recording material is in the range of 100μm to 750μm, and the pressing point of the head on the thermal recording material is positioned to the downstream side of the pressing point of the platen roll thereon in the conveyance direction of the thermal recording material.
