A process for manufacturing a fibre-on-end material sequentially comprises a) arranging a plurality of fibres in parallel 1; b) fusing or binding the fibres into ribbon or fabric; c) folding or pleating the ribbon or fabric 2; d) compressing the folded or pleated ribbon or fabric into a solid 3; and e) skiving end on material of a desired thickness from the solid 6. The skived material is a porous membrane or capillary array and the fibres comprise sheath core or "islands in the sea" fibres. A solvent may further be used to dissolve a component of the fibres and produce a membrane with micro-projections. Step b) may further comprise providing cross fibres that melt and fuse the main fibres and a chemical solvent or binder may be sewed into the ribbon in steps b) and d). Latter claims are directed at other methods of forming the materialincluding winding the fibres onto a rotating roll, cutting strips and layering the strips to be skived; cutting and welding together trapezoidal sections to be mounted on a spindle to be skived; and forming a cylindrical billet to be skived. |
