The splitter has a retaining frame (3) aligned on maximum dimensions of a wood block (2). A splitting wedge (4) is arranged at the frame and hydraulically connected with a portable hydraulic unit (1). The wedge is moved with respect to the frame by applying hydraulic pressure to allow the frame to form a support (5) for the block that is arranged on the frame such that the block is split by the wedge. The frame is designed as a support frame that is automatically fixed and passed from top of the block that lies against the ground, where the wedge is movably supported in the frame.
