An image forming apparatus comprises a memory (26) which stores test pattern data. The test-pattern data are configured for detecting the density of image data formed on a photo conductor (1). The image forming apparatus comprises a laser scanning unit (3) which forms a plurality of test patterns on the photo conductor based on the test pattern data by utilizing a plurality of a first laser powers. The image forming apparatus comprises a detector (21) which illuminates each toner test patch formed on the photo conductor out of the test patterns, receives light intensity reflected by each toner test patch, and outputs output values corresponding to each received light intensity. The output values define a first range of output values. The image forming apparatus comprises a controller (22) which compares each output value with a first predetermined value. The controller determines a laser power to be used based on the first predetermined value, when that value falls within the first range of the output values.
