The method involves controlling the brakes of the vehicle (50) to perform emergency braking independently of the driver action when a predetermined emergency braking condition is fulfilled and when it is detected that the vehicle driver requests emergency braking. When the emergency braking condition exists an emergency braking information is sent to the driver. When the condition does not exist another type of information is generated for the driver that there is a high, medium or low risk of collision depending on the position and traveling speed of the detected obstacle (i) within the detection range (54). An independent claim is also included for the assistance device.
