In particular, the present disclosure provides systems and methods that mitigate or avoid grabbing of an unlicensed, or shared, frequency band utilized by a wireless communications network node by a node of another wireless technology that operates according to a listen-before-talk scheme.

A method of avoiding carrier grabbing in an unlicensed frequency band utilized by a cellular communications network, comprising: preparing a signal mapping for a symbol to be transmitted by the cellular communications network in the unlicensed frequency band; determining whether the symbol is an empty symbol, an empty symbol being a symbol that is likely to be considered by a wireless node of another wireless technology that is sharing the unlicensed frequency band as a clear channel; and if the symbol is an empty symbol, filling the symbol with one or more additional signals prior to transmission by the cellular communications network such that the symbol is not an empty symbol.
