PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an IP telephone system which can be used for any of networks whose connection protocols are different from each other simply and at a low cost. SOLUTION: A gateway device (1) is used for a communication system which performs communication by selectively using a network from among a plurality of networks (A-C) whose connection processing contents are different from each other. The gateway device (1) has an identifying means identifying a connected network which becomes a connection object based on connection destination information transmitted from an opposite device, a second identifying means identifying a type of a terminal device which becomes a connection object based on the connection destination information, a selection means selecting modules (A1-C2) performing connection processing corresponding to the connected network and the type of the terminal device, and a connection processing means performing connection processing between the terminal device and the connected network by using a module selected by selection means.
