PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the difference in the concentration of read data, on both the front and rear surfaces at double-sided automatic reading for reading images, on both the front and rear surfaces of a manuscript by a one-time conveying of the manuscript. SOLUTION: In a scanner 70, there are provided an illuminating lamp 74 for irradiating the first surface of the manuscript with a light from one side of the conveyance path in which the manuscript is conveyed, and a CCD image sensor 78 for receiving reflection light from the first surface of the manuscript. In a CIS 50 provided at a manuscript feeder 10, an LED for irradiating the second surface of the manuscript with the light from the other side of the conveyance path, and a line sensor for receiving reflected light from the second surface of the manuscript, are provided. The illuminating lamp 74 is constituted of a xenon lamp 74, and the LED is constituted of a white LED, having emission characteristics different from those of the xenon lamp, and in the CIS 50, a filter is mounted for bringing the light applied to the manuscript from the LED closer to the emission characteristics of the light applied to the manuscript, using the illuminating lamp 74 made of the xenon lamp.
