PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk reproducing device which can discriminate between an optical disk having two or more recording layers of the same kind and an optical disk having two or more recording layers of different kinds. SOLUTION: This disk reproducing device generates focusing error signals in the RF amplifier 3 based on the output signals of the optical pickup 2, detects the S curve amplitude of the focusing error signals in the DSP 4 by changing the focusing position of the optical pickup in one direction, and finds the kinds of the optical disk based on the relations between the detected amplitudes in the microcomputer 7.
