A flood barrier comprises hollow self-filling units 10 placed end-to-end and connected at their ends by downwardly tapered bilobal keys 18 inserted into sockets (26 and 28, Fig 3) at the ends of the units. The keys incorporate concrete or other ballast to provide the barrier with negative buoyancy. The units may be formed from molded plastics such as HDPE. The keys may have a hollow plastics body (46, Fig 7) surrounded with phenolic plastics foam (54, Fig 7) to ensure water tightness during use, and filled with concrete (53. Fig 6). |
