Provided is a method for preparing (2'E)-1-(3'-methyl-4'-arylsulfonylbuten- 2'-yl)-6-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethoxybenzene useful as an intermediate for physiologically active ubidecarenone under a high (E/Z) isomer ratio at high yield. The method for preparing (2'E)-1-(3'-methyl-4'-arylsulfonylbuten- 2'-yl)-6-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethoxybenzene represented by a formula 2 comprises a step of coupling 2,3,4,5-tetramethoxytoluene with (E)-4-halo-2-methyl- 1-arylsulfonyl-2-methyl-1-arylsulfonyl-2-butene in the presence of a montmorillonite clay catalyst. In formulae 1 and 2, X represents a halogen atom, and Ar represents a non-substituted aryl or an aryl substituted with 1-3 substituents selected from alkyl groups, alkoxy groups and halogen atoms.
