Provided are a swelling composition for pretreating the polycarbonate plating to improve the adhesion when a polycarbonate product is plated, an etching composition for pretreating the polycarbonate plating, and a method for pretreating the polycarbonate plating by using the compositions. A swelling composition comprises 15-20 wt% of at least one halogen compound selected from the group consisting of chloroacetaldehyde, chloroacetic acid, dichloroacetone, trichloroacetic acid and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol; 70-79 wt% of at least one aliphatic ether compound selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol diethyl ether, diethylene glycol methyl ether and triethylene glycol dimethyl ether; and 1-15 wt% of water. The etching composition comprises 25-35 wt% of Cr(VI)O; 30-40 wt% of H2O; and 30-40 wt% of H2SO4.
