The internal combustion engine (1) has a compound-effective turbine (14), arranged in an exhaust gas system (4). The turbine passes through the exhaust gas system and mechanically coupled on the drive shaft (7) of the engine. A fuel-heated combustion chamber is formed separately and assigned to the effective turbine, where the fuel is temporarily burnt. An exhaust gas re-circulation device has a return line between the exhaust gas system and an intake system (6). An adjustable return valve represents the control valve for the combustion chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
