PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce data processing time by efficiently reading data from a storage medium storing image files. SOLUTION: Image data start to be read in advance from a memory card without waiting for any print instructions from a user. When the amount of data in image files is small (step S301) and when no images are rotated (step S302), fixed-length read modes (steps S303-S305) are executed. When the image files accompany large rotation, variable-length read modes (steps S311-S316) are executed. In the fixed-length read modes, data having data length corresponding to the size of one line buffer are read (step S304). In the variable-length read modes, when the data length to the end of the line concerned is less than a buffer size (step S312), only data to the end of the line are read (step S313).
