The invention relates to a method for merging postal objects (2) into a stack of mail items (3) that have already been sorted in a machine according to the postman's round, which comprises the following steps: the postal objects (2) are inserted in sequence into a rack (4) with slots (5); the stack of mail items (3) is placed on a merging table (7); a control and command unit (11) displays on a display screen an indication (13) representing a number of current postal objects (2) to be merged and a position for inserting the postal objects (2) into the stack of mail items (3); the number of postal objects indicated on the screen is then removed manually from the rack and inserted into the stack in order to perform a current merge operation; and the control and command unit (11) takes a distance measurement before and after the current merge operation in order to detect a collection error in the rack.
