The device has a hot embossing tool (1) operating on a workpiece by a pressing device (7), and a unit provided for tempering the tool. The unit comprises a bolt-shaped temperature transfer element (2) with heat and cold regions (3, 4), and a thermal connection of the transfer element on the tool is switched back and forth between the heat and cold regions. The tool is an embossing die with a through hole, in which the bolt-shaped temperature transfer element is movable between two switching positions. An independent claim is also included for a method for plastic deformation of a workpiece.
