The method involves calculating the quantity of the fuel for an upstream fuel type. A change of fuel type is made occasionally. A mixed operation with two fuels is done and the calculation of the quantity of fuel, which is to be made in the last, is made immediately such that the required air flow is calculated, if the engine does not hold in mixed mode. The combustion engine is operated with direct gas injection and an upstream injection of compressed natural gas.
