<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image signal conversion apparatus and an image display apparatus which improve color reproducibility of an image. <P>SOLUTION: The image signal conversion apparatus is used in an illumination unit 120. The illumination unit 120 includes a liquid crystal panel 30R for modulating red component light in accordance with an image signal for red, a liquid crystal panel 30G for modulating green component light in accordance with an image signal for green, and a liquid crystal panel 30B for modulating blue component light in accordance with an image signal for blue. Yellow component light is superposed on one of red component light, green component light, and blue component light. The image signal conversion apparatus includes a control part 130 which controls the amount of superposition of the yellow component light on the basis of a specific image signal out of the image signal for red, the image signal for green, and the image signal for blue. A color corresponding to the specific image signal has a hue adjacent to a hue corresponding to the yellow component light.
