A method of detecting the presence of target molecules within a population of molecules, the method comprising: (a) contacting a plurality of magnetic particles with the population of molecules potentially containing the target molecules, wherein the target molecules bind to the magnetic particles; (b) directing an excitation energy beam into the population of molecules; (c) creating a magnetic field gradient using two electromagnetic poles (312, 314) driven in a cyclical oscillating manner, whereby the magnetic field gradient attracts the magnetic particles and forms a cloud of condensed target molecules with bound magnetic particles, wherein the magnetic field gradient causes the cloud of condensed target molecules with bound magnetic particles to cross a path of the excitation energy beam as the cloud of condensed target molecules with bound magnetic particles crosses between the electromagnetic poles (312, 314) in a cyclical manner; and (d) detecting emission from said cloud of condensed target molecules with bound magnetic particles as it crosses the path of the excitation energy beam. The target comprises one or more molecule types selected from the group consisting of a nucleic acid sequence, an amino acid sequence, a carbohydrate sequence, an ion and a feature of a protein determined by non-primary structure. The probe specific signal may be a fluorescent signal. |
