PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain new compounds to be utilized in the held of dichroic pigments or the like useful in liquid crystal display device filed. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I[Y1 to Y4 are each expressed by formula II (h is 1 or 2; A is p-phenylene or the like; E is p- phenylene or the like; G is -H, -F, -Cl or the like) or the like and at least one of Y1 to Y4 is formula II; X is H, a halogen, cyano, an alkyl, aryl, an alkoxy, an acylamino, a carboxylic acid ester], for example the compound of formula III. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting, for example, a dianilide compound of formula IV (Z1 to Z4 are each OH, methoxy or the like and at least one of Z1 to Z4 is OH or methoxy) and an acid chloride of formula V to cyclize the dianilide compound of formula IV and esterizing at least one of OH or methoxy groups in the dianilide compound of formula IV by the acid chloride of formula V.
