PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an ingot for a work roll by ESR (Electro Slag Remelting), wherein the surface quality and inside quality of an ingot are improved with a satisfactory balance, and, particularly, the formation of a dendrite pattern in the bottom part is suppressed, and to provide a work roll obtained by working the ingot for a work roll obtained by the above production method. SOLUTION: In the method for producing an ingot for a work roll by an electro slag remelting process, in a stationary state, the mold form ratio expressed by the ratio between a melting velocity (kg/hr) and a mold diameter (mm) is controlled to 0.77 to 1.13 to melt a consumption electrode, and further, in the initial stage of melting till the above stationary state, the consumption electrode is melted at the velocity of 1.05 to 1.25 times to the melting velocity in the stationary state to produce the ingot for a work roll.
