PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of reading errors. SOLUTION: At the time of removing a roll sheet P from a printer, a pattern for sensor positioning P2 in the shape of a laid U is printed together with a roll sheet remaining amount pattern P1 on the roll sheet P. When the roll sheet is attached to the printer the next time or after, the roll sheet P is conveyed so that a reflecting point of light from an optical sensor crosses two lines of the horizontal direction (main scanning direction) of the laid U. The pattern for sensor positioning P2 is read by the optical sensor, and a center part between the two lines is set to be a reference position. The optical sensor is moved from the reference position in the main scanning direction. Whether each block of the roll sheet remaining amount pattern P1 is a printing block or a blank block is read by the optical sensor while the line of the vertical direction (conveyance direction) of the laid U of the pattern for sensor positioning P2 is made a reference position.
