Method detects the entry of a print medium (2) into a printer (1) and calculates the beginning of digital generation of partial color images (3,3',3,3') to achieve a register supported positioning of color prints on the substrate. The leading edge (5) of the print medium is precisely determined when it enters the printer after which the relative positions of partial color images are determined. The invention also relates to a device for adjusting the register position.
