PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing an epoxy resin small in a content of low-molecular-weight components by producing a novolak phenolic resin small in a content of the low-molecular-weight components such as unreacted phenols and binuclear components and sharp in a molecular distribution and reacting it with epichlorohydrin. SOLUTION: This method for producing the epoxy resin comprises (a) the step of producing the novolak phenolic resin by reacting a phenol with an aldehyde by the use of a phosphoric acid and (b) the step of reacting the novolak phenolic resin with epichlorohydrin.
