Methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) decomposition comprises separating a MTBE-containing stream containing more than 1000 ppm 2-methoxybutane into a MTBE overhead stream and a high-boiling bottoms stream by distillation and decomposting the MTBE on a catalyst, these steps being performed in such a way that the decomposition product contains less than 1000 ppm linear butenes.
