Disclosed is a gas exchange membrane that is used in an artificial lung. Said membrane is made of expanded, closed-cell material (9, 10), particularly silicone rubber. In order to produce said membrane, a starting material containing a blowing agent is initially extruded, whereupon the extrudate is foamed. The gas exchange capacity of the obtained gas exchange membrane is greater than that of previously known materials as a result of the high surface permeability.
