PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering apparatus for a vehicle, which steering apparatus can properly detect the deterioration of a transmission ratio changing means. SOLUTION: The steering apparatus for the vehicle comprises a transmission ratio changing mechanism 4 comprising an input shaft 5 connected to the side of a steering wheel 2 and an output shaft 6 connected to the side of direction adjustable wheels 3 for changing the transmission ratio between the input shaft and the output shaft by rotationally driving an electric motor 41. The degree of the deterioration of the transmission ratio changing mechanism 4 is detected based on the electric current I for operating the transmission ratio changing mechanism 4 and the steering torque T detected by means of a torque sensor 91.
