The present invention provides a method for operating an internal combustion engine, specifically a diesel-type internal combustion engine for a ship. In an operating mode of an internal combustion engine, power used by the internal combustion engine is determined depending on an amount of working fuel introduced into the internal combustion engine in the operating mode. In an adjusting mode of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine operates at a regulated rotational speed, and an amount of adjustment fuel required to maintain the specified rotation speed of the internal combustion engine during the process of operating at the specified rotation speed is determined. And in the operating mode of the internal combustion engine, power used by the internal combustion engine is determined depending on the amount of adjustment fuel determined in the adjusting mode and depending on the amount of working fuel introduced into the internal combustion engine in the operating mode. |
