The invention relates to a method for use in a system comprising a source device and a sink device both configured to engage in a cryptographic protocol. The method ensures that the source device and the sink device remain synchronized. One of the devices transmits a message that provides an indication of the state of the cryptographic operations at that device. The indication may be provided as a cryptographic hash or CRC of at least some of the state variables of the cryptographic protocol that are maintained by that device.
