PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a method for efficiently separating and recovering phenols from a mixed aqueous solution containing phenols and saccharides; and a use of a hydrophobic ionic liquid.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for separating and recovering phenols which comprises: (a) a step of bringing a mixed aqueous solution containing phenols and saccharides into contact with a hydrophobic ionic liquid to transfer phenols to a hydrophobic ionic liquid phase; and (b) a step of recovering phenols from the hydrophobic ionic liquid phase obtained in the step (a).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
