Provided is a negative electrode material for a secondary battery, capable of realizing favorable charge and discharge cycle characteristics by reducing and suppressing the expansion rate of a high-capacity alloy material containing silicon. The negative electrode material is achieved by alloy particles, which has electron conductivity and comprises silicon and at least one transition metal selected from a metal group belonging to transition metals which have difficulty reacting with a lithium atom, wherein the alloy particles are composed of amorphous silicon and silicide microcrystals of the silicon and the transition metal, the silicide microcrystals being scattered in the amorphous silicon. |
