The seal has a pair of slip rings, where one of the rings is provided for common rotation with a shaft (6) and the other ring is held at a seal housing (8) and is prevented against the rotation with the shaft. A monitoring unit is provided to monitor operating conditions of the slip ring seal. The monitoring unit has a force measuring unit (10), which is provided in the rotation force flow between the housing and the latter ring, to determine frictional force and to produce an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic output signal that characterizes the force.
