<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide an austenitic stainless steel having superior softness and cold forgeability, by controlling the existence state of B in a stainless steel containing B. <P>SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel having superior softness comprises, by mass%, 0.05% or less C, 0.1 to 2.0% Si, 0.1 to 5.0% Mn, 5.0 to 15.0% Ni, 14.0 to 20.0% Cr, 0.05% or less N, 0.001 to 0.01% B, and the balance Fe with substantially unavoidable impurities, while controlling an amount of Cr residue after extraction to 0.03% or less, and an amount of effective B to 0.001% or more.
