PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus for increasing an image processing rate while maintaining accuracy in recognizing a target object. SOLUTION: A plurality of multi-resolution images having different resolution are generated on an input image (S16). A correlation evaluation function is defined on each multi-resolution image, a correlation value between the correlation evaluation function and each pixel in the multi-resolution image is calculated, and a position of a local region is extracted on the basis of the correlation value (S18). A size of the local region is defined according to the resolution of the multi-resolution image (S22). The target object is detected with respect to the local region. Thus, the local region is extracted in appropriate position and range with respect to a feature portion of the input image. Accordingly, the target region is appropriately limited, and the target object can be detected quickly without deterioration in accuracy. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
