An industrial mat comprising: a core construction that provides strength and rigidity to the mat, the core construction comprising: (a) plural layers or plies of wood or engineered wood components that are nailed, bolted or riveted together to form a rigid core construction, or (b) a layer or ply of a thermoplastic material in the form of a plurality of adjacently arranged elongated members or a sheet member that optionally includes open or closed cells therein or therethrough, or (c) a thermosetting plastic support structure in the form of a plate, beam, grid, grating, ladder or pultruded tubes, or (d) a metal support structure in the form of beams that are welded together to form a frame or ladder structure, or a plate that optionally contains apertures therein, or (e) at least two layers or plies of elongated, sheet, plate, beam, grid, grating, ladder or tube members wherein the layers or plies are fastened or joined together; and an encapsulation of a thermoplastic, thermosetting or elastomeric material or a mixture thereof that surrounds and fully encapsulates the entire core construction and forms top and bottom surfaces of the mat, wherein the encapsulation has a thickness sufficient to provide environmental resistance to the wood components or core construction that it encapsulates, while also providing abrasion resistance to the mat; wherein each layer, ply or support structure has a length and width that substantially corresponds to that of the mat and has a thickness of not less than 0.75 inches and not more than about 12 inches or between about 1 and about 8 inches or between about 1.5 and about 4 inches.
