A method of inactivating viruses is provided. The method comprises the st ep of topically applying an antimicrobial composition comprising: an organic acid; and an anionic surfactant mixture having a characteristic selected fr om the group consisting of: a linear alkyl chain having a chain length of fr om about C4 to about C12 and a total head group size of at least about 4 Ang stroms; a branched alkyl chain having a chain length of from about C4 to abo ut C12; an unsaturated alkyl chain having a chain length of from about C4 to about C12; and combinations thereof to an area in need of treatment.
